18-24 August is Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea Faka-Tonga – Tonga Language Week!

The theme for 2024 Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea Faka-Tonga – Tonga Language Week is:

'E tu'uloa 'a e lea Faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá.

This means "The Tongan language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community", and relates to the overarching 2024 Language Week series theme of "Sustainability."

We celebrate Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea Faka-Tonga and other Pacific Language weeks in Aotearoa NZ to acknowledge and support our Pacific fāmili who live both here and elsewhere, and to engage with our Pacific communities and help nurture and preserve their languages for future generations.

As Te Manatū mō Ngā Iwi o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa | The Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP) says, "Pacific languages are a key cornerstone for the health and wellbeing of Pacific people. History shows us that a loss of language leads to a loss of culture and identity."
