Te 14 ki te 21 o Mahuru | 14 - 21 September
Te 14 o Mahuru marks the date in 1972 when Te Petihana Reo Māori (the Māori Language Petition) was delivered on the steps of Parliament in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
Ake ake ake - a forver language
The theme for Te Wiki o te reo Māori 2024 is "Ake ake ake - A Forever Language." As Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori explains, this theme "represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of our language. It also reflects the commitment New Zealanders have to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future. Under enduring pressure te reo Māori has shown it will adapt and survive. It grows with our people, our culture and our environment...'Ake ake ake' symbolises hope and resilience. The ake ake tree is also known for its resilience. It produces some of the strongest of all native woods and grows in some of the harshest climates. The name ake ake reminds us the tree is durable. Just like te reo Māori. We can think of te reo Māori as a seedling with potential. Raised with others, given care and effort, it can grow and give shelter for future generations. Every action helps to make te reo Māori a living language across Aotearoa."
Learning te reo Māori
No matter what age you are, it's never too late to start learning te reo Māori! Every little bit of knowledge helps to keep the language alive and thriving.
No matter where you are on your reo journey, Te Wiki o te reo Māori is the perfect time to practice, to learn a little more, or simply to celebrate te reo Māori and the use of it in your everyday life.
As healthcare providers we know that health is about so much more than just your physical wellbeing. Language and culture both contribute to a person's hauora, and supporting the revitalisation of te reo Māori is an important part of honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, encouraging hauora Māori, and being a great Kiwi!
